Each year, applications for enrolment in the following year from in–zone students will be sought by a date that will be published by public notice in a medium appropriate to the area served by the school.
This will enable the board to assess the number of places that can be made available to students who live outside the home zone.
Out-of-zone enrolments
Each year, we’ll announce how many places we have available in the following school year for children who live outside the home zone. We’ll publish this in the newspaper that’s local to Highfield along with information on how and when you can enrol your child.
Out of Zone Enrolments
Applications for enrolments will be processed in the following order of priority:
1. First priority must be given to students who have been accepted for enrolment in the Special
Programme (Te Whare Maru) run by the school and approved by the Secretary for Education.
2. Second priority must be given to any applicant who is the sibling of a current student of the
school.
3. Third priority must be given to any student who is the sibling of a former student of the school.
4. Fourth priority must be given to any applicant who is the child of a former student of the school.
5. Fifth priority must be given to any applicant who is a child of an employee of the school’s board
or a child of a member of the school’s board.
6. Sixth priority must be given to all other applicants.
Before the application deadline associated with each pre–enrolment period, a Board must, by public
notice in a medium appropriate to the area served by the school:
• confirm the already advertised dates for the receipt of applications and for the holding of the
ballot.
• state the likely number of out of zone places that remain available.
If there are more applicants in any priority group than there are places available, selection within the
priority group will be by ballot conducted in accordance with instructions by the Secretary, under
Schedule 20, Clause 3 (1) of the Education and Training Act 2020. Parents will be informed of the date
of any ballot by public notice in a medium appropriate to the area served by the school.
Applicants may be required to give proof of address or sibling relationship.
Te Whare Maru enrolments
To be eligible for our special programme, Te Whare Maru, your child must be verified for the On-going Resourcing Scheme.
Each year of each year, we’ll announce how many places we have available on Te Whare Maru for the following school year. We’ll publish this in the newspaper that’s local to Highfield along with information on how and when you can enrol your child.
Highfield School operates ‘Te Whare Maru’ which is a special programme for up to 14 learners with multiple disabilities, verified for the On–going Resourcing Scheme.
Te Whare Maru students are included, wherever possible, into mainstream classes and are involved in the social life of the school. Students have access to all the school’s facilities and resources e.g. library,
swimming pool, playgrounds etc.
To be eligible for enrolment into Te Whare Maru, a student must be verified for ORS.
Each year the Board will identify the number of out of zone spaces available in Te Whare Maru for the following year. If there are places available, the Board will publish information by way of a notice in the community newspapers and on the school website. The notice will indicate how applications are to be made and will specify a date by which applications must be received.
If there are more applicants than there are places available, places will be allocated in priority order.
Places will be allocated to students in the following order:
- Those who are already enrolled at the school (outside the special programme)
- Those who have a sibling currently attending Highfield School
- All other applicants
Where there are more applicants than spaces, selection within that priority will be by ballot conducted in accordance with instructions issued by the Secretary under Schedule 20, Clause 3 (1) of the Education and Training Act 2020 (as described below). The ballot will also establish the waiting list for
vacancies.
Applications for Te Whare Maru can be made by contacting the school office.
FAQs
Where do I get the enrolment form?
Complete this online enrolment form
Pick one up from the school office or request one by calling us during school hours on 03 686 1419 or emailing: office@highfield.school.nz.
Once complete, just hand it back to us at the office.
When can my child start school?
Your child can start at Highfield School on their fifth birthday. However, we recommend enrolling them well ahead of this; that way, they’ll have time to visit us and get comfortable with their surrounds before their first day.
I want to come for a visit and chat about enrolment. What should I do?
Give Nicola Casey-Newton a call at the Office on 03 686 1419. She’ll schedule a time for you and your child to come for a school tour with our Principal, Amy Logavatu.
At this meeting, you’ll get a chance to see our learning environment, talk to some of our teachers, and get answers to any questions you might have. If you can, bring the completed enrolment forms with you. But if not, don’t worry – we’ll give you an enrolment pack with everything you need.
What do I need to do before my child starts school?
Before your child’s first day with us, we’ll need the completed enrolment form along with a copy of their birth certificate (if they are new to the school), their immunisation certificate, and their passport with valid visas, if applicable.
